White wines with a bouquet reminiscent of fruit and flowers and a refreshing dry taste are typical of Styria (Štajerska), the biggest wine growing region in Slovenia. At the Protner farm we grow all sorts of wines typical of this region: Laški Rizling, Renski Rizling, Sauvignon, Kerner, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Rizvanec and Muscat Ottonel.
The wines we offer are light and refreshing. We offer both dry and sweet wines and have the right wine for every taste.
We offer the semi-sweet Protner blend and the dry Protner Cuvée wine. Wine blends consist of two or more varieties of wine, which are typical of every wine growing region. Usually the wine blend is named after the wine growing region or after the surname of the winemaker.
Moreover, we sell the varietal wines Laški Rizling, Renski Rizling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris and Kerner. We are also very proud of our own medium dry sparkling wine, which is produced by the classical method.
Our alcoholic beverages assortment includes home made spirits and liquors. To produce our spirits we use wine distillation. The wine spirit ages in oak barrels and this gives it its characteristic taste, aroma and colour. Our liqueur assortment comprises wine, cherry and walnut liquors. We also offer home made plum brandy.
The bottled wines are packed in cardboard boxes containing six bottles. You can also choose a gift pack containing three, two or one bottle. Wine can also be poured directly from the barrel into portable wine containers.
Our spirits and liqueurs are bottled in classic bottles (0.75 l, 1 l) and in themed bottles, which are an excellent gift for different occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings.
Our wine cellar and the grape harvest
Our wine cellar was built in the nineteen-seventies. When we expanded the vineyards, the wine cellar had to be expanded as well, but we carefully preserved the older parts of it. Today, 60,000 litres of wine can be stored in it, and approximately 50,000 litres of wine are produced each year, depending on the harvest.
We always look forward to the harvest in autumn. Because we have to take care of our guests during the weekends, we harvest the grapes during the week. People from the village help us; to harvest 31,000 grapevines spanning over 9 hectares of carefully maintained vineyards in one week, we need approximately 20 pairs of hands.
In the past, wine cellars were equipped with only wooden wine presses, oak barrels and no electricity. Modernisation brought, along with other equipment, pneumatic presses, state of the art cellar equipment and stainless steel vessels. On our farm we combine tradition with the latest technology. From our own grapes we make grape juice which turns into wine through the process of fermentation. The wine ages in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks until it is filled into bottles. We store our wine and sell it at our inn.
